On November 29, 2024, the third edition of our Annual Conference took place, focusing on the theme: ‘Impact: The Engine of European Competitiveness.’ The event brought together over 220 leaders from government and business to explore how impact management can drive innovation, resilience, and a competitive, sustainable economy.Â
Prof. Mariana Mazzucato (UCL), one of the most influential economists of our time, delivered a compelling keynote highlighting how actively shaping markets can foster inclusive and sustainable growth. Mazzucato, known for her influential work on the Mission Economy, emphasized the necessity of embedding impact into our economic systems to address today’s geopolitical and environmental challenges.Â
She challenged us to rethink the relationships and governance structures that define the public, private, and third sectors. Highlighting the importance of symbiotic ecosystems, she urged leaders to move beyond traditional public-private partnerships, ensuring they are mutualistic rather than parasitic or exploitative.Â
Mazzucato’s keynote not only underscored the urgency of addressing geopolitical and environmental challenges but also provided a visionary framework for redefining innovation in pursuit of the common good.Â
The conference also featured a panel discussion with Mariana Mazzucato, Vivienne de Leeuw (CFO, Port of Rotterdam), and Werner Schouten (Director, Impact Economy Foundation), where they examined how mission-oriented policies can enhance economic competitiveness and sustainability. Together, they demonstrated how prioritizing impact can build a future-proof economy for businesses and society alike.Â
